Conceptual Framework for Historic Preservation and Development
The Santa Fe Civic Housing Authority (SFCHA), after consultation with persons and entities, particularly prominent and highly respected Tribal members, and after careful consideration of both the purpose of SFCHA as a developer of affordable housing in northern New Mexico and the history and legacy of St. Catherine’s intends to develop the St. Catherine’s property in accordance with the following:
- Work in collaboration with the St. Catherine’s Project Tribal Advisory Committee members and alumni, community members and other stakeholders to create a commercially sustainable development on the campus of St. Catherine’s that would enable SFCHA to conserve key original structures as a testament and enduring legacy of St. Catherine’s Indian School while being beneficial to the community;
- Seek a zoning change of the property to enable it to create a hospitality and retreat center that may include event and performance venues, meeting rooms, a museum, a well-being and health facility, commercial dining and retail space, and other amenities that would help finance the conservation and sustainability of the historic buildings on the site as well as offer a destination for visitors and locals alike;
- Create a conceptual development framework that would offer appropriate parameters and guidance of the development that would appropriately balance the unique cultural and historical significance of the property, with the creation of a beautiful destination for visitors and locals to enjoy for years to come;
- Allow for meaningful and respectful input and participation in the conceptual design and development of the property by alumni of St. Catherine’s and the greater Native American community;
- Create the opportunity for a Native American community or entity to acquire an ownership interest in the project and development with SFCHA;
- Pursue the development of the property in manner that preserves the important history of St. Catherine’s for future generations while at the same time creating a beautiful destination for the public to enjoy.
